Precision and Craftsmanship: A Celebration of "Made in Japan"

The AC02 launched at the London Design Festival in 2022, succeeding the AC01. The differences between the two products, designed by Jasper Morrison, are subtle to the naked eye. The most significant change, however, that breaks ground for Punkt. is not a design feature but a manufacturing one. The AC02 is made in Japan and hand-assembled in Ibaraki by one of the country’s leading clockmakers.

"Made in Japan": A Standard of Excellence

It is well-known that precision and quality are deeply rooted in Japanese culture, and the pursuit of perfection and mastery of craft makes ‘Made in Japan’ so famous worldwide. It signifies not only quality but also a philosohy of relentess improvement and innovation. Punkt. wanted a level of manufacturing quality equal to the quality of the materials used to make the AC02. So, the clocks are made in Ibaraki, where they are hand-assembled individually for Punkt. The result is a product that reasonates with discerning consumers who approciate the story behind the objects they own.

Another advantage of Japanese manufacturing is its commitment to sustainability and durability. The AC02 is designed to stand the test of time, both in terms of its build and its timeless design. This aligns with Punkt.’s mission to create objects that are not only beautiful but also meaningful and long-lasting.

The future of manufacturing

The Punkt. AC02 is more than just a clock—it’s a celebration of design, craftsmanship, and collaboration embracing the philosophy of "Made in Japan,". In a world increasingly driven by speed and mass production, the AC02 stands as a reminder of the value of taking the time to do things right.

As Yusuke Nagatani of Rhythm aptly put it, “The future of manufacturing is Japanese.” With the AC02, Punkt. is leading the way into that future.

We had some photographs taken in Ibaraki, where a primarily female workforce meticulously and intricately builds the AC02s for Punkt. one-by-one.
